About the World War 1 - Information and Facts on WW1

World War 1 (The Great War, the War of Nations, world war one, ww1) is a world conflict that took place from 1914 to 1918, and began in Europe with the assassination of the Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
First World War was the first conflict in which there was a mass mobilization of more than 65 million soldiers on both sides of the battlefield.
During World War I, for the first time chemical weapons were used, the first mass bombardment of civilians from the sky happened, and some of the first large-scale massacres of civilians have occurred.
WWI is a decisive exit from the old world order, marking the collapse of the absolutist monarchy in Europe. The war will prove to be a catalyst for the Russian revolution that will continue to inspire revolutions in countries like China and Cuba and will set the stage for the Cold War between the USSR and the United States.
Germany's defeat in the war and the failure to address some of the causes of the Great War set the foundation for growth national socialism and its final result - the outbreak of World War II in 1939.
World War I also led to increased use of mass industrialization as the basis for a new form of warfare that relies entirely on technology, with increased number of civilian casualties.
The term "First World War", which implies an event different from the "Second World War" is not popular among some historians, which consider the War just as the first phase of a three-decade war that extends from 1914-1945.
Other historians, however, see the First World War as one of the consequences of the French defeat in the Franco-Prussian wars leading to the French exploitation of the Balkan crisis as an occasion for a general war.
First World War became known as trench warfare, where a large number of soldiers were bound for the trenches and could not move much due to stress defense. This is especially true on the Western Front.
Approximately 10 million soldiers died on the battlefield, while the number of civilian deaths due to direct military action was approximately 1 million.
However, the consequences of the war were terrible for people as well as for the economies of the countries, so as a consequence of World War I in the post war era, more than 6 million civilians died (excluding the Influenza pandemic).
In Macedonia, it is estimated that 16,67-27,8 % (1) of the local population died during WW1.  This percentage is estimated for the whole territory of Serbia (with Vardar part of Macedonia within), but we must take into the consideration the fact, that on the actual front line, many towns and villages were not evacuated, as it was done on the Western Front.
Also due to military actions and the previous Balkan Wars, the population in Macedonia was heavily affected by hunger and diseases, so due to the lack of accurate information, we can only assume that in Macedonia this percentage is higher than the average (16,67-27,8 %)
