The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand - 28 June 1914 - WW1 Information

The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Serbia is also known as Vidovdan  assassination.
Vidovdan is a Serbian national and religious holiday, celebrated on June 28 (Gregorian Calendar), (June 15 - Julian calendar). The Serbian Church designates it as the memorial day to Saint Prince Lazar and the Serbian holy martyrs who fell during the epic Battle of Kosovo against the Ottoman Empire on June 28, 1389.
The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, which triggered the First World War, happened on that same day  - June 28th 1914.

“The assault of Vidovdan. 
On June 28th 1389 our Empire was destroyed, on the battlefield of Kosovo Polje; on this day Sultan Mourad I, the greatest enemy of our Nation, was killed by Miloš Obilić.
On the same day in 1914, Gavrilo Princip killed Franz Ferdinand, the greatest enemy to our freedom at Sarajevo. This was the first of the events which led up to the rebirth of our ancient Empire and to our reunion with our Croat and Slovenec brothers.
