Grand-Couronne (Kale Tepe) and Devil’s Eye – Remnants of the Great War near Star Dojran

Grand Couronné (Kale Tepe), also known locally as “Devil’s Eye,” is one of the most prominent historic positions of the First World War in the Doiran area. Rising above the western side of Lake Doiran, the hill formed part of the fortified positions of the Doiran Front during the Salonika Campaign and played an important role in the fighting in the region.

Today, the site is a remote battlefield landscape, with surviving trenches, bunkers, dugouts and other remnants of the wartime positions, as well as wide views over Lake Doiran and the surrounding countryside.
